I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips or advice on auditioning for the front ensemble? Is there anything specific that would help me in my auditoin or in preparing for it? Any and all advice is welcome! Thanks!

The exercises will be posted online in the upcoming month, but you'll have to prepare a solo for the instrument you are auditioning for, so you can get started on that as soon as you'd like.

As far as technique goes, we use the Steven's grip on all the keyboards for our four mallet grip. If you don't have it already, I highly recommend picking up the Method of Movement, by Leigh Howard Stevens, he goes in depth on the four mallet technique which is pretty much identical to what we use.

The two mallet technique uses a back three finger fulcrum, and will be explained in the technique packet that is posted with the exercises.

Other than that, come to camp with a positive attitude, a willingness to learn new things, and don't be shy. If you have questions, don't be scared to ask them! Just find an instructor, or any vet, and we'd be happy to answer any of your questions.

If you want to talk more about it, hit me up on aim (smileyevil87)

Thanks! Yeah I already have the stevens grip down. Do I need to have a solo prepared at the audition? Also, how difficult is it to get a spot? How many returning vets are there for 09?

The audition weekend is mostly everyone in one room on the boards, in a group setting. Throughout the weekend, there will be individual auditions where you will play the audition material, your solo, and possibly some sight-reading.

I'm not sure as to the number of veterans returning, but everyone must audition for their spot. If you are a more talented, better fitting applicant then a veteran, you will get the spot. I've only been to the Ohio camps, and there are usually around 30 people in the pit room in November.
