John received a Bachelor of Music Education from Texas Tech University and then continued on to earn his Masters of Music in Conducting with Dr. Gary Garner at West Texas State University.
John has extensive experience as a music educator. His first position was as the head director of the North Carrollton Junior High bands in Carrollton, TX. While working at the junior high, he was also responsible for design and instruction of the high school’s 350 member marching band. John has also worked in small schools as the only director for Little Elm band students in grades 5-12 During that time, he was able to successfully grow the program from 25 to over 250 members. John also served as Assistant Band Director at Sherman High School and, before retiring from teaching in 2010, spent 7 years as a band director in the Richardson ISD. He has also been a TMEA Junior High Region Chairman, served as a PTA President, has been awarded with several outstanding leadership and volunteer awards, and has held many positions in PTA and on the local high school band board.
John became involved with DCI after his son, Corey, became a Bluecoats member in 2005. After volunteering during those seasons, John fell in love with the Bluecoats and accepted a position with the administration staff in 2007. He then served as the head cook through the 2009 season. After taking a year off from touring and retiring from the teaching profession, he is excited to devote more time to the corps. John serves as the head cook for spring training, then serves as truck driver (the chuck truck of course!), provides driver support, keeps the corps equipment in working order, and helps with the cooking when needed.
Outside of his time with Bluecoats, John now works as an independent home repair and remodeling specialist.
