Rhythm IN BLUE

Rhythm IN BLUE is an ensemble of Bluecoats that participates in the SoundSport® program of Drum Corps International. The ensemble is open to performers 18 and over, and operates with a lesser time and financial commitment than a full-time touring drum corps, while still providing the Bluecoats Experience that performers around the world seek.

The goal of Rhythm IN BLUE is to provide a more accessible and affordable program that offers the Bluecoats Experience while at the same time engaging in innovative and inspiring programming for the SoundSport® format of Drum Corps International.

In 2023, Rhythm IN BLUE earned overall Best In Show and All-Age Best In Class at the SoundSport® International Music & Food Festival!

Auditions for Rhythm IN BLUE 2024 are open now!

Auditions are 100% virtual, registration is $50.

Rhythm IN BLUE is a unique performance ensemble. In the words of 2023 Color Guard member, Stephen Stutzman, “it wasn’t quite marching band and not quite indoor but something interesting that I’ve never seen before.” 2023 Keyboard member Steve Popernack sees Rhythm IN BLUE as a unique group, “It’s not a typical drum corps show and is kind of its own ensemble.” Natty Trunko, also a guard member in 2023, said, “I knew I wanted to keep my skills up after high school but I couldn’t afford to do drum corps.” Tim Kuhne, the oldest 2023 member at age 60 and a former Bluecoat from 1981, said of the season, “I just want to be like I’m a teenager again, have fun and keep doing it as long as I can.”

Who is eligible to participate?

  • Those who will be 18 or older in June and have marching arts experience with brass, percussion, or colorguard are eligible for Rhythm IN BLUE

What is the audition process?

  • Auditions will be primarily to assess the ability level of the performers. As SoundSport® does not have a set member size limit, we are looking for a variety of talent levels and the desire to perform and have fun in this newer DCI format. Auditions are for meant to guide the design of the show, not necessarily cut participants to fit a set ensemble size. However, there may be certain sections with Rhythm IN BLUE that may be limited due to instrumentation, props that take up space on the smaller stage or balance of the ensemble.

What will it cost?

  • 2024 fees are expected to be around $1,200 and will include 11 provided meals during rehearsal and performance days.

What is the time commitment?

In 2024 Rhythm IN BLUE will meet over five weekends between May and August with extended dates for the final week of performances that culminate with events in Indianapolis, Indiana including the SoundSport International Music & Food Festival.
