Statement Regarding The Conviction Of Derek Chauvin
The conviction of Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd marks an important moment in American history and a step toward a more just society. We hope it can be the beginning of a new era of accountability for those who commit violence against Black people and people of color.
However, a singular service of justice cannot bring George Floyd back to his family, and it cannot on its own fix the problem of systemic racism in America or reform a broken criminal justice system. This trial and conviction provide a roadmap for how change can come, but there remains much work to be done.
To that end, today we renew our commitment to advancing an anti-racist culture at Bluecoats, expanding access to our programs, and advocating for consequential change within the DCI Community. Today must not be the end of our collective dialogue about race, discrimination, and violence. We must continue to hold ourselves and our institutions accountable as we fight for progress.
