Today Bluecoats and the world-renowned experimental band Son Lux announced the start of a two year creative partnership. The Oscar-nominated band, known for their film score of Everything Everywhere All At Once, and their critically-acclaimed experimental music, has been named Artist In Residence at the marching-music organization for the next two years. The partnership includes the use of three Son Lux titles in the 2024 drum corps production, and new music composed by Son Lux, for use in Summer 2025. Ryan Lott, founder and band leader, will travel to the corps this summer to collaborate with the corps’ design team and to spend some time working with the performers in the corps.

"We’re tremendously excited for our upcoming collaboration with Bluecoats, and the unique creative opportunities that will emerge from working for the first time with an ensemble of this scale. Harnessing the power of 150 incredibly skilled musicians and dancers is new territory for us, and we’re thrilled for the chance to do something we could never do on stage or in the studio,” said Ryan Lott of Son Lux.

Son Lux and the Bluecoats design team have already begun collaboration on the 2024 production, with musicians beginning to learn music at the March Brass Camp and April Full Corps Rehearsal & Design Camp. Both Bluecoats and Son Lux look forward to 2025 when Son Lux will write new music for the corps, and together, they will craft a remarkable level of collaboration between the two ensembles.

“When I think about what is most exciting in experimental music and creative ideas today, Son Lux is one of the first voices that come to mind,” said Bluecoats Artistic Director Jon Vanderkolff. “Our entire team is thrilled to work with Ryan, Rafiq, and Ian. This partnership is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our young performers, and a really exciting creative collaboration for us all”

During a visit to the corps’ upcoming 2024 Spring Training, Ryan Lott will sit down with the Bluecoats for an engaging masterclass opportunity, and plans to work with the corps in rehearsal. The Bluecoats design team and Ryan will work together during Spring Training, and throughout the summer, as the corps develops and refines its production.

Fans of Bluecoats and Son Lux can expect the collaboration to be available on future vinyl releases as well as co-branded merch!

The Bluecoats 2024 production will debut on June 29th, 2024 at Bluecoats Opening Night Community Celebration. The event will be held at the University of Mt. Union and streamed exclusively on FloMarching.
