Today Son Lux, Bluecoats’ 2024-25 Artist In Residence, released “Endlessly (Again Again),” a new version of their single “Endlessly” made almost entirely from performance recordings of the 2025 Bluecoats.
In addition to today’s streaming release, the recording is exclusively available on Bluecoats’ double LP Again Again, which encapsulates recordings and source material of the two year collaboration between Bluecoats and Son Lux. The LP is available for pre-order at bluecoats.com.
Written as a commission during the design process in 2025, the piece was the culmination of the Grammy-nominated band’s two-year residency with the corps. The partnership began in 2024 when the corps built its championship-winning show around Son Lux’s music. For 2025, Son Lux gave the corps “Endlessly” before it was released, and the corps made it the closer of “The Observer Effect.” That arrangement included live sidechain gating, a studio technique that had never been tried on a football field: the audience hears the brass line only when the snare line strikes.
Son Lux rework their lead single from Out Into by incorporating a new recording of The Bluecoats, the Canton, Ohio drum corps and 2026 DCI World Champions. The corps commissioned “Endlessly” through a partnership that began in 2024. The album’s hand-played, rhythm-first approach goes full scale: 125 musicians on live brass and percussion. Fits alt-electronic and experimental indie pop lists; for fans of Peter Gabriel, Björk, and John Philip Sousa.
Following the season, Son Lux used the multitrack recordings of the corps’ performance, including individuals’ performances as well as field microphones. Son Lux drummer Ian Chang took those stems apart and rebuilt them. He estimates that about 90 percent of the sounds in “Endlessly (Again Again)” come straight from the Bluecoats recordings. The opening chords are the front ensemble’s marimbas played through a sampler, and the kick drums are processed from the drumline. The shimmering textures are the brass feed from the sidechain section pitched up an octave or two, and the track ends with the snare line’s figures sped up to hyperspeed.
“Endlessly (Again Again) leans in to the audacious jubilance of the original’s call to action for perpetual self-discovery with the help of the Drum Corps International champions Bluecoats, whose brass and drum line excellence is chopped and screwed in this remix to joyous effect,” said Chang.
“The first time I listened, I knew right away that’s our front ensemble. That rosewood sound is unmistakable,” said Bluecoats CEO Mike Scott. “Our performers are going to think it’s the coolest thing to hear their performance like that.”
Chang and Scott talk through the collaboration, from how the corps rehearses to a section-by-section listen of the remix, on the latest episode of Son Lux’s podcast, Plans We Make: https://sonlux.fireside.fm/17.
