Diversity & Inclusion Advisory Council Meets To Set Goals

Last month we announced the formation of the Diversity & Inclusion Advisory Council at Bluecoats. This council’s first purpose is to ensure that Black voices within our community are engaged as we advance an anti-racist culture within our community.

Without our usual summer drum corps programming to focus on, now is the time for Bluecoats to take swift action and ensure that, even without the drum corps on the field, our values continue to make an impact. To that end, we would like to share these four action steps that we will begin work on today.

Bluecoats History Night Highlights Traditions Rooted in Membership Diversity

On June 20, Bluecoats held our annual History Night, a celebration of Bluecoats history and a way for current participants to learn more about the people and events of past seasons. This year’s event was transitioned to an interactive Zoom presentation and call, and brought together alumni from every decade as well as the 2020 Bluecoats membership. As a part of this event, Bluecoats alums Charles Stewart and JD Mayo spoke to the group about their experiences as African-American drum majors in the 1990s. Their presentation made clear the significant impact Black voices have had on Bluecoats history and traditions, and the continuing impact of their legacy today.
