Bluecoats Welcomes Bryen Warfield and Dan Coleman to Board of Directors

OFFICERS AND EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE ALSO ELECTED AT RECENT ANNUAL MEETING

We’re very pleased to welcome Bryen Warfield and Dan Coleman to the Bluecoats Board of Directors, both as Directors At Large. They were elected at the recent Annual Meeting of the Corporation.

At that meeting, Scott Swaldo was elected to continue his service at President of the Board. Tom Scheck was newly elected to the position of Vice President of the Board, and Randy Lamb was appointed Secretary. Vicky Riley, Esq. and Brad Bennett will continue to serve on the Executive Committee as At Large representatives.

“Dan and Bryen bring a wealth of experience, knowledge, and empathy to our Board,” said Mike Scott, CEO. “Bryen’s experience as a Bluecoats’ brass instructor, alumnus, and band director, and Dan’s world-class experience as the Senior Director of Development for the San Francisco Symphony make these two individuals the best possible additions to our Board and to the highest level of leadership at Bluecoats.

Bryen Warfield was a performing member of the Bluecoats for three seasons and later served as a brass educator for the Columbus Saints, Santa Clara Vanguard, and the Bluecoats. He is also Co-Chair of the Bluecoats Diversity & Inclusion Advisory Council. Bryen is an active performer, adjudicator, clinician, and conductor throughout the United States. He serves as the Associate Conductor and tubist with the Old Crown Brass Band of Fort Wayne, IN.

Mr. Warfield is currently the Director of Bands and Orchestra at Homestead High School in Fort Wayne, IN. The Homestead Band and Orchestra program supports over 300 students through the Spartan Alliance Band, 3 concert bands, 2 jazz bands, Anonymous Blue, and the Homestead Symphony Orchestra. Prior to his tenure at Homestead, Bryen was the Assistant Director of Bands at Whiteland Community High School. All ensembles under Bryen's direction have received honors and distinctions from contests at national and local events including being named a Featured Ensemble at the 2020 Indiana Music Educators Association conference, and two-time Bands of America Grand National Finalist

Bryen received his Bachelors of Music in Tuba Performance from the University of Louisville and his Masters of Music in Wind Conducting from The Ohio State University. Bryen has participated in conducting masterclasses, workshops, and festivals around the country with many esteemed conducting teachers such as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Hugh Wolff, Donald Thulean, Kevin Sedatole, Kevin Noe, John Lynch, and Robert Ambrose.

Dan Coleman has more than 10 years’ experience in nonprofit arts, culture, education, and government institutions. He has a comprehensive fundraising background with experience in executive leadership roles and principal gifts, major gifts, planned giving, institutional giving, and campaign development and execution. Dan currently serves as Senior Director, Development at the San Francisco Symphony, leading fundraising for the Symphony and its Development Department. He joined the SF Symphony in November 2019 in the role Director, Development, Campaign, and Strategic Projects. Prior to this time, he served at Cleveland Institute of Music, where he served as Director of Development and Senior Development Advisor. Prior to the Cleveland Institute of Music, Dan worked for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra, and Ashland Symphony Orchestra.

Dan is deeply committed to professional development for his colleagues and across the orchestral industry. As such, he has served on the Guest Faculty for the League of American Orchestras’ Essentials of Orchestral Management Program, and has presented regularly at League of American Orchestras conferences. Dan has also served on the Board and Staff Diversity Taskforce for the League. He holds a Master of Music in Orchestral Performance (Trumpet) from Indiana University and a Bachelor of Music in Performance (Trumpet) from Capital University. As a DCI alum, Dan marched Capital Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps in 2001, 2002, and 2005 and is currently a friend of DCI. Dan was born and raised in Northeast Ohio.

Mike Scott
Mike Scott is a clinician, consultant, and the CEO of Rhythm X, Inc., a non-profit music education company in Dayton, Ohio. Mike earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 2012. There he studied percussion and conducting and completed the Farmer School of Business Summer Institute. Before beginning his career as an administrator and teacher, Mike was an active performer in the marching arts. In 2011 Mike was the conductor of the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps of Canton, Ohio and was a performer in Rhythm X’s percussion ensemble from 2011-2012. Mike was also a member of the Miami University Marching Band for four years, serving as the drum major during the 2011 and 2012 seasons. In 2013 Mike began work at Rhythm X, Inc. as the Operations Director, managing the business development and logistics of the organization. He was also the Director of Instrumental Music at St. Ursula Academy in Toledo, Ohio. There he taught band, orchestra, and general music in grades 6-12. Prior to the 2015 competitive season, Mike became the first full-time employee at Rhythm X, Inc. as the company’s CEO. There he works with the organization’s President Tim Fairbanks to develop the future strategy of the company. During the summer months, Mike travels the country with the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps as the group’s Tour Administrator. He has also served as the tour manager of The Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps of Allentown, Pennsylvania. Mike proudly endorses Innovative Percussion, Etymotic Research, and Fred J. Miller Inc.
